Boxcar Park in Everett

Not familiar with Everett's waterfront? Input the coordinates below and discover an inviting 2-acre park right at water's edge. Flat and very square the park is rather stark. However it's location adjacent to the water and its isolation make it a perfect secret getaway. I find out later the park has been around for quite awhile and there are annual events and crowds streaming into this area. Follow the lefts and rights of the backroads and you'll get here. Better yet, Google Map the address.

On a Wednesday afternoon during the noon hour I catch snoozers in their cars and trucks, a few picnickers, and some young men flying a kite in the soft breeze, too soft to offer any lift to the kite. These few bodies are dwarfed by the spacious park and large gravel parking lot.

On one corner of the park is the building I came to photograph (pic, image?). With  nary a spec of landscaping, the Weyerhauser Building is viewed on all sides. I find a mysterious X carved into each corner. The structure has ornate features along the eaves and windows. There are four distinctive window styles I find out. The siding also has different textures and styles. The whole building is a showpiece for the various types of wood being harvested from the forest. The Weyerhauser Timber Company used the building as offices and headquarters.

Built in 1923 the architect is Carl Frelinghuysen Gould. His work can still be found up and down the state. Most notably he designed the flatiron shaped Times Square Building located at 414 Olive Way, Seattle. The Weyerhauser Building is currently not open to the public.

Boxcar Park is open 7 days a week from dusk till dawn. Catch one of the annual events like the Sail-In-Cinema where movies are shown on a huge screen on summer nights. Jam to bands at the Rock the Fourth event held every 4th of July.

Or, skip the events and show up on a lazy summer day where people take catnaps in their cars. Go to the Northwest corner of the park. There is a large metal structure with a harpoon facing north. Beneath the harpoon is a flat metal band with roman numerals on it. This is a armillary sundial. The time I shot the "image" below was exactly 1:30 p.m. as a closeup of the sundial will show.
