Ocean Shores on Washington's west coast
Ocean Shores is ideally located, however, not because its easy to get to or convenient. Its peninsular location makes it perfectly isolated from the rest of the world. Getting here is not quick or simple, but worth it, especially in the off-season with barren streets, plenty of vacancies, and a beach almost exclusively your own. You don’t even have to to look both ways while exiting from your hotel.
Getting here requires traversing two towns: Aberdeen or Hoquiam. These are working towns with much to offer in their own right, but are thankfully separated geographically from Ocean Shores. Highway 109 which leads out of Hoquiam enters Ocean Shores located on the Brown Point Brown peninsula. To add further distance from the rest of humanity is Gray’s Harbor, a bay of substantial size. If you are continuing north after your visit like I am, you will stick to the beach and not have to return the way you came in.
The wise make reservations before they arrive here. About every mid-range hotel chain has discovered Ocean Shores Boulevard, including: Quality Inn, Days Inn, Best Western, Shilo Inn,and Comfort Inn. We chose GuestHouse Inn & Sites over an equal number of large independent and tempting hotels like the Sands Resort and the higher end Polynesian Resort. Prices swing widely from $49 and up, depending on location, amenities, and age. Almost all hotels line Ocean Shores Boulevard facing west towards the beach. These will be marked up, but deals abound so call around. We negotiated two
rooms with two queens for $60 each. No view, but beach access is steps away. The hotel also has an indoor heated pool, free Wi-Fi, and a full breakfast.
If coming in after sunset, still try to make the beach which is the true gem of the peninsula. As the sun drops, the sky fills with reds and more hues of blue than thought possible. Sea birds and the smell of the ocean air tell you that the effort to get here was worth it. Breath deep and remember what you left behind and why you came.
